Forty-three years before John Travolta lost his wife, Kelly Preston, to breast cancer, Travolta’s girlfriend, Diana Hyland, died of the same disease.
Travolta revealed on Instagram that Preston died on Sunday at the age of 57 after a secret two-year battle with breast cancer. He said that the Jerry MaGuire star “fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many,” and her “love and life will always be remembered.”

Back in 1977, when Travolta was just 23-years-old, he also lost Hyland to breast cancer when she was only 41. Hyland was also an actress who starred as Travolta’s mother in the 1976 movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.
According to People magazine, Hyland had a mastectomy two years before she died, and the Pulp Fiction star told the outlet in June 1977 that Hyland “didn’t know she was going to die for sure until two weeks before.”
While he was in the middle of shooting Saturday Night Fever, Travolta flew back home to Los Angeles to be with Hyland where her health took a dramatic turn for the worse. Travolta was with Hyland when she died in his arms, and he said he “felt the breath go out of her.”
“I gave her great joy the last months of her life,” he said at the time. “I always feel she is with me — I mean, her intentions are. Diana always wanted the world for me in every possible way.”
After Hyland’s death, Travolta said that he had “never been more in love with anyone” in his life, adding “I always feel she is with me.”
“I thought I was in love before, but I wasn’t,” said Travolta more than 40 years ago. “From the moment I met her I was attracted. We were like two maniacs talking all the time on the set of Bubble. After a month it became romantic.”

Travolta said that he had more fun with Hyland than he had ever had in his life. He also admitted that just before he met her he thought he would never have a successful relationship.
Twelve years after Hyland’s death, Travolta met Preston during a screen test for their 1989 comedy The Experts. The couple married two years later – on September 5, 1991 – when Preston was two months pregnant with their son, Jett.

Kelly Preston is survived by her husband, John Travolta, their daughter Ella, 20, and their son, Benjamin, 9. Jett Travolta passed away in January 2009 at the age of 16.
